The Northern Railway
The Nordland Railway (or Northern Railway) runs between the historic city of Trondheim and the beautiful Northern town of Bodø. The 729 km. long railway crosses the Arctic Circle and takes you through stunning Norwegian scenery. The whole journey takes about 10 hours. The train departs twice a day, and also runs as a night train with sleeping compartments.
The train is an easy and comfortable way of exploring Northern Norway, whether you are travelling all the way to Bodø or visiting a destination along the route. The trip is just as beautiful in winter as in summer, and truly a memory for life. Lean back in your seat and enjoy the view to the sea and the mountains while you are driving past 44 stations, 293 bridges and 154 tunnels.

Attractions and destination along the Nordland Railway

The Saint Olav festival in Stiklestad
Close to Verdal station you will find Stiklestad and Scandinavia’s oldest outdoor theatre. Stiklestad was the battlefield where King Olav Haraldsson fell on July 29 th 1030 and became known as St. Olav. Every July you can experience the St Olav festival with the performance “Spelet om Heilag Olav” based on the Saint Olav drama.
The Arctic Circle - 66% North
On your way across the Saltfjellet mountain you will pass the Arctic Circle. The Arctic circle marks the entrance to the Arctic and is located at 66% north.
Take the train to the Midnight Sun
The Arctic circle also marks the entry to the land of the Midnight Sun. This is the southernmost spot where the sun shines 24 hours a day around midsummer in June.
The town of Bodø is the end destination at the Nordland Railway. There are plenty of things to see and do in Bodø: enjoy the long summer nights with the midnight sun, visit the outdoor cafes and experience the festivals and Northern culture. The Northern Lights
The Northern Light belt hits Northern Norway in Lofoten and follows the coast to the North Cape. There is nowhere in the world where the chance is bigger of seeing the lights. The Northern lights can be frequently seen during winter, from late autumn to early spring.
