Dovre Railway

The Dovre Railway runs between Oslo and Trondheim through the beautiful Gudbrandsdalen valley and across the mighty Dovrefjell mountain range. The whole trip takes 7 hours, and the train has frequent departures. If you prefer to travel at night the Dovre railway also runs as a night train service with sleeping compartments.

The Dovre Railway takes you to some of Norway’s best national parks, mountains and scenic attractions. If you spend a few days or a week on the journey, you can explore some great destinations along the route.

At Dovre there is a connection to the Rauma Railway – a nice detour that you should not miss – the Rauma railway is one of Norway’s most popular train rides with stunning views.

In Trondheim the Dovre Railway intersects with Meråkerbanen running to the Swedish border and the Nordland Railway  that can take you to Northern Norway.

Attractions and destination along the Dovre Railway

From Trondheim the train runs along the Gaula, a river teeming with salmon. There is a sharp incline as the train passes the mountain slopes of Oppdal through Drivdalen. The train continues across the mountain of Dovrefjell, with easy access to the national parks of Jotunheimen and Rondane.

Take the train to the slopes - Oppdal, Dombås, Hafjell

In winter you can take the Dovre Railway to some of Norway’s best areas for skiing. The train stops in Oppdal, Norway’s largest ski resort. You can also take the train to Dombås ski resort or the Olympic resorts by Lillehammer/Hafjell.   

The Rauma Railway from Dombås

From Dombås you can take the stunning Rauma Railway to Åndalsnes. The railway is known as one of Norway’s wildest and most beautiful train rides. The journey takes you through beautiful Romsdalen to famous natural attractions like the Trollveggen cliff face and the Kylling bridge. The whole trip takes 1 hour and 40 minutes, and is a nice detour if you are travelling between Oslo and Trondheim. Read more about the Rauma Railway .

Dovrefjell mountains

The train passes the Dovrefjell mountains famous for musk oxen, myths and trolls. The area is perfect the active or adventurous traveler with plenty of possibilities for hiking, cycling, cross country skiing, canoeing or climbing. Take a walk along the beautiful Pilegrimsleden or climb the Snøhetta mountain.  

Jotunheimen & Rondane

The train runs through the Gudbrandsdalen valley with its cultural treasures. From here you have easy access to the national parks of Jotunheimen and Rondane.  Try the popular hike to Besseggen or if you are fit – climb Galdhøpiggen – Norway’s highest mountain. The river Sjoa is a popular river for white rafting. There are suppliers offering white water rafting fitting all levels.   

Rondane has marked trails available year round with great opportunities for hiking, cross country skiing and cycling.

Lillehammer & Hunderfossen

Lillehammer is a popular destination all year round. Get a feel for Norwegian history at the outdoor museum at Maihaugen, visit the Olympic venues from the Winter Olympics in 1994 or the ski resort in Hafjell. There are also plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling and cross country skiing in and around the town.
