Maihaugen

Maihaugen tells the story of the people of the Gudbrandsdalen over the last 300 years, of life between the wars in the inland town of Lillehammer, and of homes and domesticity in the 20th century.

The calm and open landscape of the museum allows time and space for reflection. Activities and guided tours take place during the summer season. Maihaugen also mounts several special exhibitions a year, which will fascinate both adults and children. Recent exhibitions include Norwegian history through the ages, various workshops from all over Norway, and folk art in Gudbrandsdalen during the period 1750-1900.

Aulestad - the home of author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson holds a special place in the hearts of most Norwegians. Among his poems was one that subsequently became the Norwegian national anthem. Aulestad farm was for a number of years Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's home, a base for his key role in literary, cultural and political life. His home is now a museum, where time has been made to stand still and offer visitors an experience of the house and beautiful gardens.

For children
During summer you can find animals all over the museum grounds. In the backyard of the Olsen home in The Old Town, there are rabbits and hens. On the four lakes, wild ducks (mallards) settle throughout the warm season. Farm animals - horses, cows, goats and sheep - graze or are set to work in the rural area of the museum, and the pig and hens are kept on the Øygarden farm.
