"We know that many of our customers expect to have Internet access on our trains. We are going a step further and offering the option of a range of entertainment services as well," says Group Director and head of NSB's Passenger Train Division, Stein Nilson.

For Ståle Nistov, Head of Marketing in the Passenger Train Division, this is a long-awaited day.
"For many years, NSB train services have been designed to allow our customers to spend their time on board doing what they want to do. Whether you want to work, read, sleep or eat, it’s all laid on. Many people have asked for Internet access, and we are also offering entertainment and information services via a wireless network," explains Nistov.

Our new service is wireless Internet access. The Internet connection will be based on an existing mobile broadband network, so coverage and speed will depend on the coverage and capacity offered by the service providers we are signing agreements with. But some of the services on offer will be available on the train regardless of network coverage.

For the entertainment service, it will be possible to hire portable media players for which passengers can purchase films, TV programmes, news and much more. The entertainment service will be expanded in response to feedback from our customers.

Gradual introduction
The facility is being introduced initially on the NSB Regiontog (inter-city) service on the Skien-Lillehammer route. In the first instance, this will be Internet access. Coverage will then be extended to individual inter-city services between Oslo and Trondheim and Oslo and Bergen. On these routes, the entertainment option will also be available. Based on the results from these routes, a gradual further expansion will be evaluated.

Facts about the service:

- NSB has chosen Nomad Digital as the provider
- Nomad Digital was selected following an extensive tendering process. The technology to be installed in the trains will provide a standardised digital infrastructure, entertainment and Internet access for our customers
- The price for the services on offer will vary; some of them, such as train and route information, will be free
- Installation will start in autumn 2008 and, in the first instance, will provide Internet access on the Skien-Lillehammer route
- Individual departures between Bergen and Oslo and Trondheim and Oslo will be equipped with the entertainment service and Internet access at the end of 2008
- Expansion to all routes will depend on the results of the initial trials
- The service will be expanded in close cooperation with NSB's customers
- On long stretches, it will be possible to hire handheld terminals providing access to the entertainment service
- The Internet and entertainment options will also be accessible from customers' own equipment
- The Internet access speed will vary depending on the network coverage and speed that the operator offers on the specific route
- The mobile network along the railway is often less well-developed than along the roads and a wireless connection in a large space such as a train requires very robust equipment.
